China Visa and Permit Application Guide


Overview of Visa Requirements:

Except for certain visa-exempt countries (e.g., Singapore), most foreign visitors need to apply for a Chinese visa. Applicants can seek assistance from visa agencies or directly submit their applications to the nearest Chinese Embassy or Consulate.


Required Documents for Visa Application:

  • Completed visa application form.
  • One recent passport-sized photo.
  • Passport with at least six months validity and at least one blank page.
  • Itinerary or proof of flight bookings.

Application Process:

  1. All visa applications must be submitted in person or through an authorized representative. Mailed applications are not accepted.
  2. Applications should be submitted to the Visa Office of the local Chinese Embassy or Consulate.
  3. No appointment is required.
  4. Visa officers may request an interview if necessary.

Necessary Documentation:

  • Valid Passport: Original passport with at least one blank visa page.
  • Signed and Completed Application Form: For children, parents or guardians can sign on their behalf.
  • Photo Requirements: A recent passport-size photo (formal photo required; no digital prints or photocopies).

Types of Chinese Visas:

Chinese visa authorities issue visas based on the applicant's identity, purpose of visit, and passport type. These include diplomatic, courtesy, official, and ordinary visas. Ordinary visas are divided into the following eight categories:

  • L Visa: For tourism, visiting relatives, or personal affairs.
  • F Visa: For conference attendance, research, academic exchange, or short-term studies/internships.
  • X Visa: For study or internships exceeding six months.
  • Z Visa: For employment and accompanying family members.
  • G Visa: For transit through China.
  • C Visa: For crew members on international flights, ships, or land transport and accompanying family.
  • J Visa: For foreign journalists (J-1 for permanent correspondents; J-2 for temporary assignments).
  • D Visa: For permanent residency in China.

Visa-Free Country List:

Starting from 2023, China has implemented visa-free policies for select countries for tourism, business, or visiting family and friends. This initiative has significantly facilitated cross-border activities and enhanced convenience for travelers.

Visa-Free Countries (Valid until December 31, 2025):

Europe: France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Ireland, Hungary, Belgium, Luxembourg.
Oceania: New Zealand, Australia.
Asia: Malaysia, Singapore.

  • Duration: Singapore allows visa-free stays of 30 days, while all other countries allow 15-day visa-free stays.
  • Extended Stay: For visits exceeding the visa-free period, an appropriate visa must be applied for before entering China.
